Decision Scientist - People Analytics

Starbucks is looking for a senior decision scientist (similar role as Data Scientist, but with a bigger focus on consulting to address business questions through analytics) with a passion for uncovering data insights and illuminating the story of our partners (employees - through people analytics/HR analytics/workforce analytics) and customers. As part of the Global Strategy team, this position informs senior leadership across the company, working closely with Operations and Partner Resources (HR) organizations to provide insights and actionable recommendations that influence business decisions, company strategy, and outcomes.
This role requires performing advanced analytics and synthesizing employee (including survey data), customer (including survey data), and financial data to tell a compelling story.
Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.

Summary of Key Responsibilities Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following

  • Consult with clients to answer their business questions by translating unstructured strategic questions into structured questions that can be answered through data and analytics
  • Provide thought leadership on how best to define, manage, organize and present employee and customer key metrics, analytical insights, and KPIs
  • Develop and deliver presentation of insights in a way that is compelling to senior leaders and to the business
  • Leverage and seek data from multiple sources, capturing, analyzing, synthesizing, and assessing the data as needed
  • Use data visualization tools in an innovative and pragmatic way to deliver both regular and ad-hoc reports, and create dashboards for leadership to help drive ongoing decision-making
  • Independently initiates and leads strategic research projects; responsible for creating hypotheses, developing research design and analytics plans, running standard to advanced (e.g., modeling) analytics, and providing predictive decision metrics to leaders. 
  • Devise methods for identifying data patterns, trends in available information sources using a variety of qualitative and quantitative techniques.
  • Determine and recommend additional data collection and reporting requirements 
  • Participate in workgroups, providing analytics data and insights to inform initiatives
  • Develop and drive multiple cross-departmental projectsEstablish brand and team as subject matter experts in employee analytics across departments
  • Working knowledge of tools (e.g. SQL, SAS, Hive) to pull and process data from various database environments.

Summary of ExperienceMinimum of 3 years within data analysis field or discipline

Basic Qualifications
Education: BA/BS w/ concentration in quantitative discipline - Stats, Math, Comp Sci, Engineering, Econ, or similar

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Business-applicable experience in several techniques for data visualization skills, e.g. TableauAbility to handle and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
  • High proficiency with Excel including pivoting capabilities and analysis modules – VBA macros and ODBC sourcing
  • Working knowledge of basic statistics; experience with R, SAS, SPSS or similar
  • Expert Ability to collect data using a variety of methods, such as data mining and hardcopy or electronic documentation study to improve or expand databases Retail, customer loyalty, and eCommerce experience, preferred
